“Are You Leaving Again?”

I was packing for a military mission — gear piled on the floor, uniforms folded and refolded, the hum of goodbye in the air. Artemis padded into the chaos, circled once, and settled with her chin in my boot like she’d found the perfect anchor to hold me back. She looked at me with that steady, patient gaze that said everything without words: Are you leaving again?

It was a small, ordinary moment that felt enormous. The softness of her head against worn leather, the slight wag of a tail that trembled between hope and resignation — all of it wrapped around me like a quiet plea. Sweet and heartbreaking, fierce and tender, that single contact was enough to make the packed duffel and the checklist blur into the background.

This piece was created using Merino sheep’s wool on a 100% wool felt backing. Size: 8" x 10". Each fiber was layered with care to capture the warmth of a dog’s muzzle, the subtle shadow of boot leather, and the pause between departures — a small tribute to the gentle, loyal moments that hold us together when we have to go.

“Honey”

Honey is a golden-doodle owned by a dear friend, and when he sent a video of the two of them zipping from market to market making drop-offs, I must have watched it half a dozen times — not for the scenery, but for her goofy, sunlit face centered in the video frame happy as a clam to be with her owner. I grabbed a still from that little road-trip clip and used it as the spark to create her likeness, highlighting the way the light caught her curls and the mischievous tilt of her head. That sweet, waggy moment became the first pet portrait I ever made, a tiny celebration of furry companionship born from a simple clip on a busy day.

Needle-felted portrait crafted from Blue Faced Leicester locks, Shetland locks, and soft Merino wool. Highlights and shadows are refined with chalk pastels to add lifelike depth and expression. Finished size: 5" x 7".

This piece was selected for publication in Arts to Hearts Project’s 2026 "101 Art Book: Dog Edition" — a joyful honor that celebrates its heartwarming character and artisan detail.
